About This Recipe

Hoffmann's AeroPress method uses the inverted position with a coarser grind and longer steep than the classic approach. He developed it while filming his AeroPress championship video and found it produced a more consistent result.

Inverting the brewer prevents premature dripping through the filter, giving full control over steep time. The lower temperature (80°C) and medium-fine grind slow extraction and reduce bitterness.

Light to medium roasts where you want clarity and brightness rather than body. Works particularly well with washed African coffees.

  • Tip: Heat your water to 80°C — significantly lower than most coffee recipes. This is intentional; it produces a sweeter, less astringent cup.
  • Tip: Flip the AeroPress quickly and confidently to avoid spills. Practice the motion before your coffee is in.
  • Tip: Press gently with two fingers. You should feel resistance but not strain. The press should take about 30 seconds.
