About This Recipe

The Hario Switch is a V60 with a valve at the base — close it to steep like an immersion brewer, open it to drain like a pour-over. Hoffmann's recipe uses the switch to combine the sweetness of immersion brewing with the clarity of V60-style percolation.

Hoffmann's method steeps the bloom closed, then opens for a single slow pour-over drain. The immersion bloom saturates the bed evenly; the percolation phase uses the V60's spiral ribs to produce a clean, bright result.

Light and medium-light roasts where you want both the fruity sweetness of immersion and the clarity of paper filtration. Excellent for delicate East African origins.

  • Tip: Close the valve before adding water. Check it is securely closed — a partial seal will let coffee drain prematurely during the bloom.
  • Tip: Wait until the bloom is fully complete before opening the valve. Rushing the bloom reduces extraction evenness.
  • Tip: Pour the remaining water slowly in one continuous pour after opening the switch, as you would for a standard V60.
