About This Recipe

James Hoffmann published this recipe on his YouTube channel in 2020 and it quickly became the most-watched V60 tutorial online. The method uses a bloom, two main pours, and a final swirl to even out the coffee bed.

The final stir and gentle swirl level the grounds and promote even extraction, which reduces bitterness from under-extracted fines settling unevenly. The result is a clean, balanced cup with minimal effort.

Works well across a wide range of roasts — light, medium, and medium-dark. A good starting recipe if you are new to pour-over brewing.

  • Tip: The 45-second bloom with 2× the coffee weight in water is non-negotiable. Swirl gently after adding bloom water so all grounds are saturated.
  • Tip: Pour in slow, continuous circles. Hoffmann recommends keeping the spout low and close to the slurry to avoid splashing.
  • Tip: Time the drawdown. If the V60 drains in under 3:30, grind finer. If it takes over 4:30, grind coarser.
